They received many handsome and useful presents. The newly married couple will go to housekeeping at Young America. May their life be one constant ray of sunshine." Roads weren't in place yet, only trails that could be seen winding through the country site left by the horse drawn carriages of the time. Towns that take us minutes to drive to often would take hours, if not days to make it too. Below is information found at: http://www.mnopedia.org/place/ghost-towns-carver-county "The Town of Helvetia, built between Hollywood and Watertown townships, was named by residents after their homeland. John Buhler founded Helvetia in 1856; he also built the first store. Helvetia is the ancient name of Switzerland, chosen by the Swiss immigrants who settled the town. Eventually, to attract other residents besides the Swiss, the town was renamed Hollywood on April 5, 1860, for what settlers thought to be an abundance of holly bushes in the area. Resident Jacob Lahr opened a sawmill, and built a bridge over the Crow River for easier travel, in 1869. A post office was opened in 1875, run by resident Jacob Lahr. He was succeeded by a Mrs. Zahler and August Ninnemann, under whom the office moved to nearby Mayer in 1889. With the good came the bad for Helvetia, or Hollywood. The name change did not attract enough new residents. Roadways did not develop beyond trails through the brush. Families had few resources and struggled to make it. To make things more complicated, on one side of the town was a band of Dakota, on the other a band of Anishinaabe (Ojibwe). While the two bands got along with the white settlers, they fought often amongst themselves with the town caught between. Finally, an outbreak of diphtheria occurred in 1884, killing much of the town's population. The remaining residents decided to move a few miles away to the town of Mayer, joining the history of these two towns. The merged town officially became the Village of Mayer on June 28, 1900." Occupation: According to a conversation that Scott Kampen had with William Wollin (Emil's son) in 2002, Emil worked as a Teamster for an Ice Company (Shady Ice Company). William mentioned that Emil's crew would cut blocks of ice from the nearby lakes and then transport them by horse drawn wagons to the local ice warehouse where they were then cut into smaller blocks and sold to use in ice boxes and such things as that. | Wollin, Emil Louis (I875)

Hanna's immigration date is listed as "unknown" in the 1920 Census record, but we see in the 1910 census record she came to America in 1892 with her husband Tollef and son Peter. | Iversdr, Hanna Marie (I8654)

12 | From the Norwood Times newspaper dated July 14, 1892: "NOTICE to Saloon Keepers and others" "You, and each of you, are hereby notified to not sell, or give to August Wollin, of Norwood, Minn., any intoxicating liquors, of any kind. Take warning, as the law will be enforced by the undersigned town board of Young America Township. Date at Norwood this 7th day of July 1892. Henry Vogler, Ch. John Glaeser Henry Lindert" It would seem from this that August Wollin may have had a bit more alcohol than he could handle at some point. If an article would be printed in the newspapers like that today, you can surely bet there would be a lawsuit for slander. | Wollin, August (I7979)

26 | From the Norwood Time dated June 5, 1936: Mrs. Emil Wollin Burial Friday Body to be brought here following Funeral services at Hillman home. Word was received this week of the sudden death of Mrs. Emil Wollin of Hillman, Minnesota, sister-in-law of Theodore Wollin of Norwood. She suffered a heart attack early Tuesday morning, from which she did not rally. Plans are being made for the funeral services to be held at Hillman, conducted by the Lutheran minister there, with burial here at 3pm Friday afternoon. Augusta Verch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Verch, was born June 6, 1884, near Waconia. Later the family moved to Chaska, where as a young woman she was married to Emil Wollin. To this union were born three children who survive the mother, Mrs. George Blueher, (Minnie), William, and Albert, all of whom live near the family home at Hillman. Besides her husband and children Mrs. Wollin is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Verch of Chaska: seven brothers: William of Benton, and August, Herman, Paul, Louis, Albert, and Richard of Chaska; and five sisters: Mrs. Hattie Brown and Mrs. Alvina Trick of Young America; Mrs. Alberta Henderson of Minneapolis; Mrs. Emma Wanderich of Excelsior, and Mrs. Wilhelmina Maiser of Kenyon. One brother preceded her in death. Mrs. Wollin was well known in this community having formerly resided near here and having frequently visited her relative in this vacinity. Here death has come as a shock to her any friends as well as to her family, with whom the entire community sympathizes. | Verch, Augusta (I874)

27 | From the Weekly Valley Herald, dated May 29, 1919 Soldiers Boys Return Home "As noticed in this department last week several of our soldiers have returned home recently. Among them were Lambert Mohrbacher, the stalwert son of Adam Mohrbacher, and Albert Verch, son of Mr. and Mr.s. A. Verch Sr. These boys were drafted from Carver County in the spring of 1918 and went to Camp Dodge for training. They remained there but a month and were then hustled east to Camp Upton and from there went to France, landing in Brest (France) May 2nd. They marched to Camp De Serge and on July 15th went to the firing lines and from then on till the signing of the memorable armistice were kept on the jump and got all the war they ever want to see. They had advanced as far as Marcq, France, and then had to go to Noyon, where they assisted in erecting a hospital for the wounded. They remained there a month and departed for Brest where they boarded the transport Agamamon and landed in the good old U.S.A. on April 29 at Hoboken, N.J., then going to the famous Camp Mills for a few days and finally were sent west to Camp Dodge, Iowa, where they were given their honorable discharge. They have returned home in the best of physical condition and look extremely well. We are highly pleased to extend a cordial welcome to these gallant American lads, who went across the water for their country to help bring victory to the great cause for which their country had pledged its all. They have no complaints to offer about the treatment accorded them in France, but like all the other boys think there is no place like the good old U. S. A., and are tickled to get home." | Verch, Albert (I7837)

45 | Centennial Celebration starts with sale of buttons Norwood Times - February 3, 1972 Norwood centennial buttons went on sale last week and according to the committee in charge, they are "selling like hotcakes." The button has a color likeness of one of Norwood's early citizens, Teddy Wollin, deceased. The picture of Mr. Wollin was taken by Robert Pieper back in 1953 while Teddy, as he was known, was enjoying a brew in Pieper's Bar one warm summer afternoon. The picture was displayed above the bar in Pieper's for years and attracted a great deal of attention. One of the major brewing companies, whose product Teddy was enjoying, wanted to buy the photo, but Pieper declined to sell it. The picture will also be used on beer mugs which will go on sale as soon as they are delivered. For those who don't remember Mr. Wollin, he was a resident of Norwood for 68 years. Born in Milford, Wisconsin, on August 24, 1875, the Wollin family came to Norwood about 1890. He bought the Exsted farm on the east edge of Norwood from his father-in-law and operated it one year when he sold it to the late Albert Exsted and moved to Norwood. He operated a dray line here for many years and went with threshing crews in the summer. One of the stories old timers like to tell about Teddy has it that during World War II when clocks were turned back an hour for daylight savings, he steadfastly refused to set his watch back. Buttons may be purchased at any Norwood business place. With each button, the purchaser gets a chance at winning 100 old silver dollars. The dollars will be given away in four different prizes. 50 for first, 25 for second, 15 for third, and 10 for fourth. Price of a button is one dollar. The drawing will take place during Norwood's Centennial celebration, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 14, 15, and 16. Winners of the silver dollars need not be present. Note: A "dray" line was a team of horses with a type of wagon called a dray. The dray line were those who lined up to unload the goods from a train, or to on-load goods. A teamster was a person who drove the team of horses. | Wollin, Theodore (I7980)
